Continental Divide
Picture
Elevation: Varies
Description: Line of North American mountain peaks that generally separates eastern and western watersheds. It is said that if a raindrop falls on the eastern side of the divide, it will eventually end up in the Atlantic Ocean, and if it falls on the western side, it will eventually end up in the Pacific Ocean. Continental weather patterns are greatly affected by the divide as evidenced in Rocky Mountain National Park: the western slope of the divide is rich with flora, while the eastern slope is more dry and therefore more devoid of flora.

Picture
Elevation: 14,255 ft.
Description: Long's Peak is the highest peak in RMNP and can be seen from almost anywhere in the park. Well above tree line, the massive Longs Peak seems to tower over all other RMNP summits. The almost vertical east face, called The Diamond, is a popular rock climing destination for climbers from around the world. The summit is also climbed by many people VIA the North Longs Peak Trail. Although not an easy hike, under the right conditions the summit can be reached in as little as 6 hours with little or no technical climbimg equipment. Afternoon thunderstorms during the summer can be very dangerous for those who don't start back down early enough, therefore pre-dawn starts are the rule. Altitude sickness and sudden storms have put an end to many a hiker's day enroute to the summit. One of the most popular destinations in the park, hundreds of people attempt the climb in July and August.
